Week in Review #26 & 27

Week 26

Whew, I let myself get a whole week behind :-( We are still having a great time plugging along with 1st grade.

Tot-School/Something Special- As the year has progressed and Freshman has become more mobile, "tot-school" has become very informal and play based. Gator-Tot is learning through reading stories, puzzles and play. Next year, the plan is to use ABC Jesus Loves Me as a base to keep myself organized.

One day last week, I made a batch of Non-Newtonian fluid for the boys to play with. It was a HIT (and a mess)! Don't you love the Super Mario costumes that Senior dressed them in that morning ;-)

All About Spelling: Level 2- Step 9

Writing with Ease: Week 24

First Language Lessons: Lessons 93-95

Reading: Here are some of our book basket favorites. For fun Senior is reading some Star Wars chapter books that we got from Scholastic.

Adventures (week 24): In Bible, we are learning that Jesus is the Lord or lords and the King of kings. Our activity this week was to make a crown for Jesus but our jewels were not successful :-( We have LOVED learning patriotic songs this year! This week the boys are learning "You're a Grand Old Flag" & "Stars and Stripes Forever". Senior and G-Tot loved making drums from coffee cans.

They had even more fun having a parade! These pictures make me so happy.

Even Freshman joined in on the fun.

History this week was a study of Samuel Morse and the telegraph. Senior and I had a lot of fun "sending" each other messages in Morse Code. We also visited Texas and Florida.

Without question, the most fun we had this week was with science. We are continuing our study of the human body and the senses. We were looking at "sour things". Here is Senior finding which part of your tongue picks up: sour, sweet, and bitter (I was really surprised that he tasted everything- even the coffee).

Our experiment was to test acids and bases using purple cabbage water. Here is the "before shot".

All of the acids turn the purple water PINK.

Senior was surprised to see that coke is an acid (you can see the slight pink color).

Our base of baking soda turned the water BLUE.

The "after shot". We really had a lot of fun with this experiment!

Week 27

The first week of April, our homeschool group is having a Geography Fair and Senior has picked Italy to study. So....for the next two weeks we are stepping away from MFW (boo hoo) to concentrate on this project. Senior only picked Italy because of Mt. Vesuvius, so we have to chase the rabbit and study volcanoes (what an amazing blessing with homeshooling).

Tot School/Something Special: We had a ton of fun this week with St. Patrick's Day. We read a lot of good books. On Wednesday, the boys worked together to make and decorate a Leprechaun Trap (sorry no pictures). Unfortunately, that tricky little guy just left some gold coins (Rolos) and a trail of green glitter. He also turned our milk green. The best part was that he also turned our toilet water green- the boys loved that.

On Thursday, the boys graphed some Lucky Charms cereal.

I don't think that one marshmallow actually made it onto G-Tot's paper, ha ha!

Math U See: Lesson 30! Beta next week!!

We are doing a lot of vocabulary with our unit study so we are taking a little break from spelling and grammar.

Senior has read a ton of books on both Italy and volcanoes.

We are half way through with our Volcano and Italy Lapbooks. Hopefully this weekend Daddy can help Senior with his salt dough map of Italy and a volcano that we can erupt. Senior has had such a great time this week and it is amazing how much information he is absorbing because he is SO interested in the topic.

I'm so excited that Kathi at A Heart Like Water is hosting a new Homeschool Highlight for MFW families! So head on over and see what other families did this week studying in My Father's World.

  2. LOVE the way you did the diagram of the tongue for the different tastes. That was really smart! :) We didn't do the drum activities, so I'll have to live vicariously through your boys for that one! Looks like y'all had fun this week. Then again, it looks like y'all ALWAYS have fun! :)
